Interview with one of our volunteers for Awareness Week

St Helena Hospice has joined in partnership with muchloved.com a UK charity that helps people create beautiful and special memorial websites to remember and commemorate their loved ones.. The site can be used to create a personalise tribute to your loved one with no cost or obligation. The site also allows In Memoriam donations to be made to the charity of your choice. Friends

Established before the Hospice opened for patients, "Friends" raises over £20,000 every year by placing money boxes in hundreds of shops and businesses throughout North Essex. Membership subscription is just £1 per year - phone 01206 560112 or write to Friends of St Helena Hospice, 5 St Botolphs Street, Colchester, Essex, CO2 7DU.

Shops

Clacton, Dovercourt and Head Street and St Botolph's Street both in Colchester all sell clothes, small items of furniture, crockery, jewellery, toys, etc. Our shops in Frinton and Halstead sell mainly books with some records and pictures. All are supported by a Distribution Centre where much of the donated stock is sorted and then sent to each shop as required.

Shops and Distribution Centre are all staffed by teams of volunteers. More helpers and stock are always needed. Details below.

Legacies

It is so important to write a Will to ensure that all the people and things you care about are looked after and that your money and property will be used as you would wish.

Whilst we can recommend that everyone should write a Will we can only hope that people include St Helena Hospice as a beneficiary. For many years kind people have supported the work of the Hospice by leaving a legacy in their Will.

Here are some ways in which you might help St Helena Hospice in your Will:

A share of your estate.
When all your other commitments are dealt with, part of what remains of your estate can be used to benefit St Helena Hospice. This has the advantage (for us) of being inflation proof.

A specified gift of money.
Either a fixed sum or a fixed percentage of the residue (what's left after all other commitments are met). You could help to preserve the value of such a gift by linking it to a cost of living index.

Property or other items of value.
Houses, stocks & shares, furniture, jewellery have all been left to St Helena Hospice over the years.

The Wills expert at your Solicitor can explain all you need to know about writing a Will and the ways in which you can help St Helena Hospice. They can help you to come to an arrangement which satisfies your commitments to family and friends which might also benefit the Hospice.

Trust Funds

There are thousands of Charitable Trust Funds able to make contributions to the costs of running a charity such as St Helena Hospice. We make regular applications for support with capital costs and running expenses.

Volunteers

Over 800 volunteers give time and talent to help St Helena Hospice run smoothly and efficiently; without them we would struggle indeed. About half of these wonderful people work in our shops and Distribution Centre and many more (not included in the 800) raise funds for St Helena Hospice in other ways.
