£50 challenge

Dust off those entrepreneurial skills, our Birkett Long £50 Challenge is back for 2018!

We’re looking for innovative groups to take on the challenge and join our exclusive team. Set yourself a challenge and see how much money your workplace can raise for the hospice from just £50. A simple recipe of teamwork, innovation and creativity will hopefully grow £50 into hundreds, or maybe even thousands to support St Helena Hospice.

The idea is simple; local businesses are given a £50 note, generously donated by local solicitors Birkett Long LLP, and from there you’re given four months to nurture and grow it. All money raised is then donated to the hospice. Raising £1000 could pay for an Oxygen Concentrator for a patient. This medical device is used to deliver oxygen to those who have a condition which causes or results in low levels of oxygen to their blood. You can enter your business as one whole team or set up some healthy competition in the work place and register as many teams as you would like!

“The £50 Challenge is something that Birkett Long looks forward to every year. It’s an exciting way for us to meet new local businesses and hear about innovative and exciting fundraising ideas, as well as showing our support for St Helena Hospice.” Jennie Skingsley, Associate and Marketing Manager at Birkett Long LLP

Why take part?

"We thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the £50 Challenge last year, and hope to raise even more money for this fantastic cause by taking part again this year. We have been inspired by a visit to the Hospice, and pleased to have the opportunity to be able to raise money and to make a difference." Mr O Removals

“Our fundraising day was definitely an unforgettable experience that brought the whole team together.” Loofers, Colchester

"The Mosaic team has really enjoyed being involved with the £50 Challenge. In addition to the warm feeling that comes with raising money for such a great and important cause, the challenges we have undertaken - including climbing Mt Snowdon and hiking 14 miles around Mersea Island - have helped to bring the team closer together and created everlasting memories." The difference your donation can make...

Maureen knows how to celebrate her birthdays and enjoy every moment. Five years ago she was told she had six months to live after a diagnosis of heart failure, but Maureen is enjoying life thanks to St Helena’s therapies and wellbeing groups where she enjoys support from other people living with an incurable illness:

“At the groups nobody really asks ‘what’s wrong with you, dear?’ It’s more laughing and talking. Nobody really mentions ‘oh my leg hurts, or this hurts’. Everybody changes the minute they come through the door. It’s wonderful to hear laughter, especially when we get on to singing and we jazz it up! The singing is for your breathlessness. So it’s breathing techniques, trying to get your breath a bit. We have instruments to go with it. Everybody wants the percussion of course."

Raising £1,500 could pay for our Breathlessness Clinic to run for a month, supporting patients like Maureen who need specialist help with their breathlessness.

Since its inception in 2012, the challenge has raised more than £230,000! Sign up this year and join our exclusive team for 2018. Contact Lizzie Deed on ldeed@sthelenahospice.org.uk or 01206 931468,
