St. Helena Hospice’s inpatient unit can accommodate up to 15 patients in its spacious four- bedded bays and single rooms, overlooking beautiful gardens.
Families and friends are welcomed and there is an Activities Room which children may use. There is also a bedroom available for relatives to stay overnight if they wish.
Our aim is to provide specialist care and support for patients with an advanced, life- threatening illness in a relaxed setting. This support is also offered to families, friends and carers of the patient.
Backed up by support services; catering, domestic and maintenance.
There is a pleasant dining room where patients and families can enjoy a range of 'home cooked' food. For those with an uncertain appetite meals and snacks are individually prepared. Snacks and drinks are available throughout 24 hours.
Volunteers provide life enhancing skills in massage, hairdressing and chiropody.
Pets are welcome to visit as long as they have someone to take care of them.
The team cares for patients with an advanced life- threatening illness who have specific problems that may be best addressed by a short stay in the inpatient unit. These problems may be physical in nature, such as pain or nausea, with the emphasis on ‘sorting out’ symptoms so that patients can go home as soon as possible.
Other problems may be more emotional or spiritual in nature and our expertise, as with physical problems, may also be of some value to patients and families.
The chapel provides a quiet space for thought and reflection and is available to everyone whether or not they have a religious faith.
There are many reasons why patients may prefer not to die at home and the inpatient unit may be able to offer supportive care at this time.
The emphasis in every circumstance is on ‘living’ and improving patients’ quality of life.
