Time running out to join Midnight Walk

05 May 2010

There is less than a month left to sign up for a vital fundraising event which helps a local charity look after the terminally ill.

More than 1,600 women have already signed up to take part in the St. Helena hospice midnight walk setting off from the Weston Homes Community Stadium on Saturday June 5th.

The inaugural event last summer proved such a hit with for the 1,500 women who took part, the charity extended the total number of entrants to 2,500 this year.

But behind the fun is a bid to help the Hospice raise the £3million it needs to raise every year.

Kate Alden, event manager, said of the £5.1million needed to deliver its services annually, 32percent was funded in the last financial year through the NHS, via the local Primary Care Trust, leaving more than £3million to be found through fundraising activeities and general donations.

The Midnight walk was the largest fundraising event held by the Hospice last year. It raised £150,000 and this year the organisers hope it will hit the £200,000 mark.

Mrs Alden said,
“Every penny of the sponsorship we receive through the event will go straight to the Hospice to support the work we do throughout the Community. St. Helena Hospice is for anyone who has been diagnosed with a life limiting illness and all services are free of charge to patients and their families.”

She said there had been a surge in registrations for the walk and urged anyone who wanted to take part to return their forms as soon as possible.
The 7.5 mile walk is on a circular route and costs £15 to register.
Walkers, who must be over 14 and accompanied by an adult if under 18, will receive an official Midnight walk T-shirt.
