Mum’s Hospice cash total close to £200,000
10 May 2010
Tireless charity fundraiser Margaret Carouth has now collected almost £200,000 for St Helena Hospice.
Mrs Carouth from Dedham, set up the Sally Noyes Fund 27 years ago, in memory of her daughter, who died of cancer in 1978.
Since then, helped by husband, Tex, sister Sally Waight and friend Pat Nicholls, she has raised £187,000 through all manner of events.
Last year, she collected £11,600 for the hospice from salsa evenings, table top sales and a cricket event.
She also runs an annual dinner in Dedham and is planning a fundraising weekend at her Brook Street home, starting on June 25. She said: “It is a local charity people consider quite vital. It is used by many people and it always needs help with fundraising. The hospice is how people with terminal cancer should be looked after. My daughter died in the United States and there were no hospices there for her. I don’t find the fundraising hard work. It’s just something I like to do.”
Rosy Stamp, hospice director, said: “Margaret and her supporters work throughout the year, sometimes in very adverse weather conditions, to raise these wonderful sums for St Helena each year, Their spirit and sense of humour is heart warming.
“It is because of people such as this St Helena is able to go from strength to strength, supporting more patients each year and providing such vital care to local people. When she visited, Margaret commented on the figure of more than £10,000 home visits the hospice team made last year. That could not happen without people such as her. St Helena Hospice is truly grateful.”
