You, tu-tu, can join in the fun on our walk!
10 May 2010
A group of friends who are getting their pink tu-tus on and limbering up for a fundraising midnight charity walk are urging others to join them.
With less that three months to go St Helena Hospice’s second Midnight Walk 1,500 women have already signed up to take on the 12km (7.5 mile) challenge.
That’s as many as took part lst year, but the hospice is pushing hard to fill all 2,500 places it has on the 2010 walk, on June 5.
Tina Thackray, of Greenstead Road, Colchester, is among those with a special reason for wanting to help the Highwoods-based charity.
It had just opened in 1989 when her father, Bob Storey, was admitted while he battled cancer of the colon.
Tina, 42, said: “They were just so kind, I remember the hospice had only just opened and was a lot smaller than it is now, but the staff couldn’t do enough. They really made it a home from home.”
Months before her dad died, in November 1989, Tina gave birth to her son, Luke.
She added: “Dad got to see him which was absolutely lovely. We were able to visit whenever we wanted, take Luke with us and even stay overnight, which was so important. That is why people should support the hospice.”
Tina, who works for Arc Legal Assistance which are also raising cash for the hospice with events through the year, will be joined by friends Caroline Cave, 42, also of Greenstead Road, Sherle Osborne, 39, of Penrise Close, Greenstead, and Hayley Cranfield, 36, of St John’s Road Colchester.
Caroline is doing the walk in memory of her mother, Joy Sawyer, who died from cancer and her friend Dawn Marshall, 48, who is currently in intensive care with the disease.
She said: “We want her family to know we are thinking of her.”
The Gazette-supported event starts at Colchester United’s Weston Homes Community Stadium, ending up back at the football ground in the early hours of Sunday morning.
