£500,000 gift for care and dignity

20 May 2010

Makeover for Diana’s day Centre

A day centre opened by Princess Diana is to receive an almost £500,000 makeover.

The Joan Tomkins Day Centre at St Helena Hospice, in Colchester, is to receive the money from a £40 million fund, which aims to provide better quality care, dignity and privacy.

The centre at the High Woods hospice was originally funded by businessman Rob Tomkins whose wife was cared for by the hospice during the 1980s.

It was officially opened by Princess Diana in 1988, but is now in urgent need of modernisation.

It is hoped the work will start this summer and be completed by Christmas.

The project will see the creation of multi-purpose rooms, which will have a range of uses, such as visits by a doctor or for the hospice’s lymphedema service.

Hospice director Rosy Stamp said: “Our Joan Tomkins Day Centre urgently needs modernising, so we can provide patients with the highest standards.

“We are so grateful for this generous grant.”
