Help support the Hospice

20 May 2010

A couple who have had the help and support of a hospice are calling on others to take part in a fundraising scheme.

Ian MacInnes, of Chase Lane, Dovercourt, has terminal cancer and currently attends the Tendring Day Centre once a week.

After help from the St Helena Hospice since he was diagnosed, Mr MacInnes and his wife, Beryl, have tried to raise awareness of the “wonderful” work it does.

Aged 79, Mr MacInnes started doing the hospice lottery before he found out he had cancer, and as a way to raise money for the hospice the couple still play every week.

“The hospice is a wonderful, wonderful place,” he said.

“I wish I could do more for them – they do so much for me. They are good, lovely, lovely, people.”

Mrs MacInnes raised £1,000 for the hospice with a coffee morning last year and now plans to take part in Colchester’s Midnight Walk to raise more but said she wants to encourage more people to take part in the fundraising lottery.

Alex Howe, lottery manager, said: “It is such a vital source of funding for the hospice.

“It is a fun and exciting way for people to support our work and at the same time have a great opportunity of winning a range of cash prizes.”

So far, the lottery has raised more than £1.5 million for the hospice since the first draw on June 7, 2001.

There are more than 10,000 members playing each week to support the hospice, all playing with the chance of winning prizes ranging from £10 to £1,000.
